This looks strange. It seems like that 0 doesn't work, but as most near to 0, far to the middle, and most near from it, near to the middle. Positive values to the left (right from the shooter view), negative values to the right (right from the shooter left).

Something like:
 0 - doesn't work
 1024 - On the left, very far from the middle
 -1024 - On the right, very far from the middle
 1 - On the left, near from the middle
 -1 - On the right, near from the middle
